New additions to the TMW line-up include the German pianist Kai Schumacher, Canadian sound artist Ian William Craig and Estonian rap hedonists  5MIINUST

New music and city culture festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW), taking place on 25 – 29 March in Tallinn, Estonia, has revealed the last names joining its music line-up. The music programme, which includes over 160 artists, has new additions to the 28 March programme: German genre-defying pianist Kai Schumacher, Canadian sound artist Ian William Craig, Latvian urban act  JUSTIBLVCK, Islandic The Post Performance Blues Band, and Estonia’s most notorious rap crew 5MIINUST.

Renowned German pianist and composer Kai Schumacher’s solo concert will take place at the Tallinn Kalju Baptist Church on Saturday, 28 March, 9 pm to 10 pm. While he delights in pushing the boundaries between classical and pop music, Schumacher avoids the well-worn cliché “crossover.” His solo performances are acts of the pure musical – and stylistic – alchemy, serving up heady mixes of Dadaism and drum’n’bass, avant-garde and pop culture. Schumacher avoids using modern electronics and overdubs. Instead, he employs his own form of “prepared piano”, John Cage’s avant garde legacy.

Üle Heli festival’s showcase at Fotografiska has completed its line-up with Canadian sound artist and award-winning printmaker Ian William Craig. Signed to TMW’s long-time collaborator, FatCat’s pioneering 130701 imprint, Craig’s work is deeply informed by a narrative of impermanence and finding beauty within deterioration. Fascinated by the physical nature of printmaking, Craig aims to create sonic spaces, which portray physical deterioration as a unique source of the sublime. A classically trained vocalist, his stunning voice is combined with homemade analogue synths, altered reel-to-reel machines and faulty tape decks to create cascades of unpredictable decay and beauty where the failure of the machines dictates the course of the performance.

Station Narva festival’s night at the Club of Different Rooms (ETK) has enriched its selection with two more acts. Hailing from Võru, also known as the Ibiza of Lääne-Viru County, Estonia, the rap’n’trap crew 5MIINUST is, without doubt, the most hedonistic and notorious act in Estonia. Known for their intense live shows, they were named Artist of the Year at the 2020 Estonian Music Awards. Also joining the Station Narva night is The Post Performance Blues Band, an ensemble of four Icelandic women, known for their fun and raw glam and the willingness to conquer the anti-climax by dwelling in it rather than avoiding it.

Estonian new school hip-hop label LAGI has added the Latvian JUSTIBLVCK to the ÖÖLAGI showcase in F-Hoone. Always on the move to the next best thing, that urban nomad is relentless to show that now is the time to see beyond boundaries, genders and outdated beliefs and just be, in the full sense of the word.

TMW 2020 music programme on 26 – 28 March unites the most unique new talent with established musicians from home and abroad. Concentrated mainly at the Telliskivi Creative City and the Port Noblessner area, the clubs and concert halls will see over 160 artists perform from 28 countries, from Estonia to New Zealand, and from Russia to Canada.

The festival also includes a conference at the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA), public talks, an art programme, music-themed workshops for children, and excursions to Lasnamäe and Paldiski.
