Joala factory: from the basement to the tower

The history of the Kreenholm textile factory is the ideal study material to learn about the global textile manufacturing of the 19th and 20th centuries: head-spinning economical growth and steep declines, exceptionally large production volume for Estonia and fateful contracts, building a whole district around the factory buildings and the unbelievable stories of workers who got here by fate.

All of this will be explained on the new tour of the Joala factory – in the red brick building with breathtaking views from its tower. One of the last buildings from the whole complex of Kreenholm to have closed down, the company’s atmosphere has preserved best in the rooms of the Joala factory. The noise of spinning machines is saved in these walls, the staircases still remember the hundreds of pairs of feet that ran up and down here…

Meeting point: opposite Joala 30 (old gate)

Tickets: 20 € / full ticket, 15 € / discounted ticket

Baltijets: secret military factory in the heart of the city

Right in the centre of the city stands a huge building decorated with Estonia’s largest portrait of Jaak Joala. Today the walls contain a calm everyday life and the building is a home to different local, regional and international institutions. Can you imagine that just 70 years ago, the address of the building, as well as its purpose, was strictly disclosed and it was missing from many of the city’s and region’s maps?!

For many, Baltijets factory represented a place where the most talented engineers worked, developing the first school computers Juku, as well as devices for the nuclear industry, that to this day do not have analogues. In the 90s the company went through radical changes, like other similar enterprises, and the administrative building was left empty. In the nearer future, the building will be renovated, but now we have a unique opportunity to peek inside its walls and feel the scent of its past as well as today’s changes

Narova: famous furniture factory and the miniature of Old Narva

Exhibition “Old. New. Narva. 1684/1984…2034” that by comparing the past eras of glory brings focus on the future is open in the former Narva furniture factory. The years 1684 and 1984 symbolise Narva’s flourishing in the past and 2034 the city’s near future. By comparing the eras Narva’s identity opens in all its complexities. Today’s Narva, the way we know it, has been re-built twice: in the second half of the 17th century a proud trading city was built and after the second world war, an industrial city grew from the wrecks.

Former Narva Furniture Factory (Albert-August Tiimanni 1)

Kreenholm: the history of the textile giant

There is no equal to the Kreenholm manufactory. There was nothing similar to the mammoth company with more than ten thousand workers between Narva river’s foaming waterfalls in the whole of Russia or Europe. Although the machines in Kreenholm have been switched off, the bustle of the workers is gone and even the waterfalls of Narva only run a couple of times a year, Kreenholm’s industrial architecture still excites, reminding us of its glory times of being a huge industrial park.
