A reimagined version of “God and the Devil” ballet to be performed in Club Hall during Tallinn Music Week

A new take of “God and the Devil” (“Kurat ja Jumal”) ballet will be staged exclusively at Club HALL in Tallinn on 2 and 4 April. These special performances are part of the international music and city culture festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW).

“The Devil and God” is a contemporary ballet with live music, staged by director and choreographer Teet Kask. The performance, which explores the collective unconscious and its impact on contemporary society, offers a new kind of shared experience as it moves from concert hall formality to a techno temple, offering audiences an immersive shared experience, rooted in dance floor-conscious club culture.

The God — Jevgeni Grib and The Devil — Kyoshiro Oshima

Based on the prose poem by Swedish-Estonian writer Marie Kandre, the ballet features original compositions by Timo Steiner and Sander Mölder. The performance brings together ethnomusicologist Cätlin Mägi’s bagpipe ensemble, vocalist Laura Põldvere, and dancers Kyoshiro Oshima and Estonian National Ballet principal dancer Jevgeni Grib. The production’s striking multimedia elements are a collaboration between animator Juho Lähdesmäki and lighting designer Margus Vaigur.

“The Devil and God” weaves an allegorical tale of good and evil, beginning with the titular characters’ childhood. Through a narrative of spite, revenge, and ultimate reconciliation, this tale charts the creation of Hell, the collapse of Heaven and Earth, and humanity’s search for a New World—led by the Devil and his wife, with humans and God following.

The inclusion of the performing arts element marks a significant expansion for TMW, with Club HALL—the Nordic-Baltic region’s beloved dance culture destination—serving as the perfect space for this artistic fusion. This move aligns with the venue’s vision to embrace diverse art forms, bridges the gap between performance art and club culture and offers novel possibilities for experiencing the vast possibilities of music.

The play is produced by Tiiu Tamm and *birdname, with Viimsi Artium as co-producer.

Tickets for the special TMW performances of “The Devil and God” at Club HALL on 2 and 4 April are available via Piletilevi for 28-45 euros. TMW 2025 PRO pass holders have free access based on pre-registration.
