13 September 2021 Music Festival

The music programme of the international Tallinn Music Week (TMW) festival will be launched at the opening night celebration at the Tallinn Creative Hub on Thursday, 30 September.

  • In cooperation with Eesti Kontsert, Trio ‘95 will perform the world premiere of composer Liisa Hõbepappel’s new work “You Are a Continent, My Dear”
  • The opening night also features the first ever live performances of the Estonian-US-Danish collaboration “Themes For Great Cities: Tallinn” and Sander Mölder’s new album TIKS086
  • The festival will be opened by President Kersti Kaljulaid, CEO of Telia Estonia Robert Pajos, and TMW founder and Head of Strategy Helen Sildna

The opening night of TMW 2021 will start with welcoming speeches at the Creative Hub’s Black Box by the President of the Republic of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid, CEO of Telia Estonia Robert Pajos, and TMW founder and director Helen Sildna.

In cooperation with Estonia’s oldest concert organisation Eesti Kontsert, the Black Box will see the world premiere of Estonian composer Liisa Hõbepappel’s work “You Are a Continent, My Dear”, commissioned especially for TMW. According to the young composer whose creations have been likened to fine graphic art, in creating the piece, she worked on “describing non-musical phenomena with the help of music”, intertwining both conventional and novel means of expression. Hõbepappel’s work will be performed by Trio ‘95, the recent winners of Tallinn International Piano Chamber Music Competition. The trio will also perform “The Dream Servants“ by a star of Estonian contemporary classical music Tõnu Kõrvits.

The opening night will also feature the live performance premiere of the international collaboration project “Themes For Great Cities: Tallinn”, for which Estonian musicians Jonas Kaarnamets and Erki Pärnoja joined forces with Jonas Bjerre from the Danish band Mew and the American musicologist Alex Maiolo. For one week before the TMW performance, the musicians will be working in Tallinn, recording sounds for the TMW performance. The project builds on new approaches to creating music, based on the foundation of sound innovators Karlheinz Stockhausen, Delia Derbyshire and Brian Eno. The visual imagery for “Themes For Great Cities: Tallinn” will be compiled by the audiovisual artist Alyona Movko-Mägi.

The TMW opening night will conclude in the industrial Cauldron Hall with the live premier of Sander Mölder’s new collaborative album TIKS086. Sander Mölder is an Estonian composer, producer and DJ with a diverse musical background. After starting as a cellist, he has taken on very different roles in various collectives and performed on stages around the world from the Royal Albert Hall to the Primavera festival and whose music has been featured in the advertisements for UNIQLO and Oculus Quest 2. Some of his latest works include the ballet “Keres”, for which he co-authored the score. Mölder’s band will be joined by vocalists who collaborate on the album, including Estonian Daniel Levi, Aron Blom and EZEE from Sweden, and Emily Roberts from Germany.
