Sustainable Development Goals

Since 2017, TMW has been working with several partners to raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Estonia across various activities and programme elements. The keywords of this action have been a caring digital culture, human-centric urban space development, inclusion of marginalised groups, gender equality and environmentally conscious behaviour, justice and strong institutions.

To find a balance between the planet’s limited ecological resources and the well-being of its population, 193 countries in the UN agreed in 2015 on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) until 2030, both at the state and international levels.

TMW focuses on environmental awareness and conscious living, mental health, and the resilience of the cultural sector. Our activities are also guided by an additional SDG that Estonia has taken upon itself – “The viability of the Estonian cultural space”, which aims at maintaining the continuity and vitality of Estonia as a nation-state through culture. The values, methods, behavioural models, mindset and lifestyle that SDGs bring form a significant innovation in society that can be brought to fruition through culture.

Bringing together representatives from the music and culture sector, as well as institutions, community initiatives, businesses and researchers for the TMW conference and public talks series, we’ll take a closer look at how the music and culture sector can contribute to working towards the SDGs.

Since 2023, we have been working on applying the concept of sustainable development goals to Tallinn’s music industry as a partner of UNESCO Music City Tallinn. More information (in Estonian

We work with the following SDGs. Click on the icon to read more about the specific activities:

Mental health in the music and creative industry and among the youth, including uncertainty and anxiety, substance abuse, cyberbullying,  severe competition and irregular working patterns leading to mental and physical burn-out. We organise youth nights as part of the city festival, offering young people a platform to discuss topical issues in a safe atmosphere. We have addressed mental health issues of artists and music entrepreneurs, both at the TMW conference and the Estonian Music Industry Focus Day, involving specialists to present solutions.

Previously:

  • The TMW 2024 conference panel “Put Your Own Oxygen Mask on First! Building Resilience and Mitigating Stress” addressed mental health challenges in the music industry and offered solutions for stress relief and mental health care. The panel featured Tamsin Embleton (founder of Music Industry Therapist Collective), Aleksandra Denda (founder of Syncup), Asa Dyradottir (manager of Reykjavik Music City) and Henrik Ehte (manager of Funk Embassy and Selektor Studio)
  • n October 2024, team members participated in the seminar “Mental Health in the Music Field”, organized by Music Estonia. The seminar was conducted by renowned music psychologist Rosana Corbacho.
  • The TMW 2023 conference workshop “Why is going to concerts and listening to music good for your health?” introduced music therapy and the effects of music on mental and physical health. The workshop was conducted by musicians and music therapists Ingrid Lukas and Diandra Russo.
  • TMW is partnering with MyFitness from 2023 to support the team’s physical and mental well-being, offering them better opportunities to be active and promote a healthy lifestyle.
  • The TMW x Infohunt Youth Creative Hackathon in 2021 was aimed at finding solutions to the mental health challenges that the youth are facing. The winning teams of the hackathon presented their solutions at TMW 2021
  • TMW Talks public discussions. In cooperation with Telia, we launched the #suurimjulgus /  Greatest Courage campaign and held a public discussion for youth about cyberbullying and netiquette (2019). Another Talks series event (2020) included a discussion about depression among youth, anxiety caused by the pandemic and climate change, as well as the “sadness cult” trends in current popular culture.
