Roots Session

Roots Session is a new concert series that presents music from different corners of the world, drawing inspiration and values from the traditions and roots of different nations.

Blues, americana, country, gospel, folk, jazz and roots-rock are the keywords that describe this year's TMW Roots Session’s music programme:

Estonia-based Argentinian Pepi brings a powerful presence and soul-stirring music of Araukaaria with his 6-piece band from Viljandi.

Finnish Ethno Gala 2020 Artist of the Year Juurakko, a five-woman band, combining Finnish and Afro-American roots music with vivid storytelling and rakish skiffle spirit. Highly skilled a cappella blues singing is combined with exotic instruments like the kantele, the harmonium, jouhikko (the bowed lyre), the cigar box guitar, a coffee mug and a suitcase.

Megan Black is an award-winning artist from Scotland creating music that combines the nostalgia of 70's blues rock with the modern sound of queer, feminist pop.

True virtuosos from Georgia, Tihomir Hojsak (double bass) and Filip Novosel (tambura – Croatian traditional instrument) merged two string instruments from different traditions, blending contemporary jazz, and Croatian ethno music. Hojsak & Novosel will bring you world-class musicianship from both jazz and folk.

A heart-warming and entertaining performance will be brought to the stage from the Faroe Islands, by songwriter Dania O. Tausen and her 5-piece band, performing award-winning songs in Faroese.

SARĀB - meaning "mirage" in Arabic - masterfully mixes rock, modern jazz and Arabic sounds. A delicate flirtation with a latent anachronism, they slip into a listening of memories where harmony makes the maqâmât - oriental modes - dance in a rain of electric fury.

Irish-influenced modern folk-rock band The Crosslegs radiate youthful vigour, poetry and romance.
